Bridesburg Boys & Girls Club embarked on a mission in November 2010 that hoped to curb the amount of trash and debris in our neighborhood, Pick Up a New Attitude. The Keystone Club members in conjunction with staff organized a community clean up inviting members of the community along with our unit council members to become a part of beautifying Bridesburg one block at a time. After completing a whole day of work, the block between Buckius and Lefevre Streets looked spotless. The memorials on the grounds of the Recreation Center were also tended to. The support that the kids received was so overwhelming that the members wanted to do it again once the weather got warmer.

The idea was simple: take the Keystone and Torch Club members’ ambitions of making this area beautiful once again and challenge all of the other youth groups in the area to make a difference. Since then, the project has included planned trips to both the Camden Riversharks and Philadelphia Phillies to participate in their “Go Green” initiatives.

The challenge does not stop at the youth organizations; it extends to the adults as well. The beautification plan cannot happen without the full support of both children and adults. We need all of our community members to pitch in and pick up a new attitude toward recycling, throwing away trash, and making Bridesburg the shining sun amongst the neighborhoods in Philadelphia.

Since the Pick Up a New Attitude challenge was made, Keystone and Torch, other Club members, Unit Council members, community members and staff have organized and participated in 3-4 clean ups each year; the first in November, in preparation for the holidays and the last of the program year Memorial Day weekend preparing for Bridesburg’s Memorial Day Parade.
