In June 2019, as part of Boys & Girls Clubs of Philadelphia’s collaboration with Global Partners for Development and the Brethren Community Foundation, our 2015 Youth of the Year, Zainab Abdullahi, participated in a 3-week service-learning trip, traveling to Tanzania, Uganda, and Kenya. Along with representatives from Global Partners, Brethren Community Foundation, and BGCP, Zainab learned about educational and conservation issues facing these countries, participated in community meetings, and immersed herself in an international experience. We plan to build upon this inaugural trip in the future, by offering other Youth of the Year winners a chance to take this journey, and working with our collaborators at Global Partners for Development and Brethren community Foundation to develop a Traveling Literacy Symposium to address youth literacy needs on a international scale.
